Brazil looks at logistical advantages of using ports in Chile, Argentina

Brazil’s federal planning and logistics firm EPL is evaluating the logistical advantages of ports in Chile and Argentina to export products from the Brazilian state of Mato Grosso do Sul.

The state is a large agricultural producer, especially of soybeans.

In a press release, EPL said it visited ports in both countries to analyze the products to be exported, logistical chains, operating costs, customs integration aspects, access to Asian markets, level of bureaucracy, among other factors.

A preliminary survey from a series of technical visits to the Chilean ports of Iquique, Tocopilla, Mejillones and Antofagasta, showed the use of these ports could reduce logistics costs by more than 20%, said EPL.

The route between Chile and Asia can be completed in 28 days, 12 days less than the transportation across the Atlantic Ocean that producers in Mato Grosso do Sul currently use, it added.

Cargo distribution centers in Salta, Perico, Guemes and Jujuy, in northern Argentina, will be part of upcoming technical visits by EPL.

EPL said it estimates that the results of the surveys from the port visits and a logistical diagnosis of Mato Grosso do Sul will be presented later this year.
