Reaffirming its commitment to reduce gaps in road, airport, port, rail and telecommunications infrastructure nationwide, Peru's transport and communications ministry (MTC) has been executing its assigned budget efficiently. The ministry spent 1.841bn soles in December, some 5% higher than what was spent in the same period of in 2020.

Investments in the transport and communications sector in December 2021 totaled 1.094bn soles, producing a cumulative annual total of 8.277bn, some 69% higher than spent in 2020, which was a record. Likewise, maintenance activities for concession and non-concession roads in the national and regional road network, as well as other items related to current spending, totaled 748mn soles.

Among the main advances in investments during December, the ministry highlighted payment for the assessment of the Chinchero airport project; payment for works, acquisition of property, and release of obstacles for line No. 2 of the Lima Metro system; payment of commitments for airport, railway and telecommunications concessions; and payment for the implementation of transport and access networks for broadband services in Puno, Arequipa, La Libertad, Huánuco, San Martín, Pasco and Amazonas. These advances accounted for 52% of what was spent in December.

On the other hand, payments for road concession works, as well as the construction and maintenance of highways, national bypasses, regional roads and local roads, accounted for around 21.4% of the total spending in December.

Historic record

The amount spent on investments to December is a new milestone. This is the highest budget execution seen in the last decade. Spending in January-December 2021 reached 8.277bn, 15% more than in 2019 (7.222bn).

In 2021, at the total budget level the sector spent 12.428bn, contributing to the revitalization of the national economy, with the aim of providing the country with an adequate, comprehensive system of safe, reliable transportation and high standards and quality, and taking telecommunications to vulnerable populations.
