Brazil surpasses 12 GW of installed solar capacity Ambev's PV plant in Goias

Brazil's installed solar power generation capacity has surpassed 12 GW, domestic solar power association ABSOLAR announced last week.

Distributed generation (DG) has the lion's share of 7.5 GW of the total, with large-scale plants accounting for the remaining 4.5 GW.

According to ABSOLAR, solar represents 99.9% of all DG systems in the country, while large scale stands for 2.4% of Brazil’s overall electrical mix.

Since 2012, Brazilian solar plants have brought in more than BRL 60 billion (USD 11.2bn/EUR 9.8bn) in investments and created around 360,000 local jobs.

The advance of solar energy in Brazil helps to diversify the electricity mix, reduces pressure on water resources and limits the risk of further increases in the electricity bill, CEO Rodrigo Sauaia said.

Overall, solar power has helped the country avoid 13.6 million tonnes of carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions during electricity generation.
