Fin Min expects Peru's economic recovery to begin in 3Q 2020

18:01 | Lima, Apr. 23.

Economy and Finance Minister Maria Antonieta Alva on Thursday predicted that economic recovery in Peru would begin in the third quarter of the year, following the resumption of some economic activities starting May 4.

"We expect the economic recovery will begin in the third and fourth quarter of the year," she said during a press conference held at the Government Palace in Lima.

The cabinet member noted that the Government of Peru is working on a gradual economic reopening plan

"It is critical for the economy to renew itself —in a controlled fashion— following a series of health protocols and standards," she expressed.

In this respect, the minister affirmed that the Government is putting emphasis on recovering the country's potential growth in the medium term.

Concerning the negative economic forecasts made by some international institutions for the country's growth in 2020, Alva explained they were prepared in a context of uncertainty.

"These projections have to do with the impact of the fiscal package implemented by the Government, which is a bold package, as we have previously said," she remarked.

In this sense, the government official highlighted the success of the Central Reserve Bank (BCR) in the first auction of Reactiva Peru Program interest rates.

Thursday marks the thirty-ninth day of mandatory social isolation.
