Guatemala bans flights from US, Canada to contain coronavirus spread

Guatemala will ban flights from the US and Canada in an effort to contain the coronavirus outbreak, after the first COVID-19 case was confirmed there Friday.

The moratorium will begin Monday, President Alejandro Giammattei announced Friday in a televised speech, along with other travel restrictions, including a cruise ship ban.

Any travelers who arrive from North America before then “will be subject to quarantining,” he said.

Giammattei also announced the country’s first coronavirus case, which was confirmed earlier in the day, as a man who came from Madrid through Colombia.

In addition to the cruise and flight ban, Giammattei has requested that the Mexican government stop deportations back to Guatemala.

The country has already banned flights from Europe, China, South Korea and North Korea.
