After a turbulent political week in Peru, Mexico’s president clarified his country’s diplomatic position.

Fearing an impending impeachment vote last week, then Peruvian President Pedro Castillo attempted an ill-fated coup, was impeached and attempted to flee to the Mexican embassy to request asylum before being detained. On Tuesday, Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador was asked about his country’s diplomatic relationship with the Andean nation.

“Well, it’s on pause,” he said. “Awaiting whatever’s going to happen, and hopefully a democratic resolution is sought.”

He also said that Mexico still considers Castillo the legitimate president of Peru.
