The Central Reserve Bank of Peru (BCR) on Thursday reported that, in the last two decades, the growth of Peru's non-traditional exports has been led by agricultural and livestock products.

"Agricultural and livestock products have been the star of non-traditional exports. They have seen a 15% average annual expansion," BCR Governor Julio Velarde stated.

According to Velarde, the takeoff of non-traditional exports in the past years is something interesting to see in Peru.

"If one observes the average of the last five years, Peru is the country whose growth has been most benefited from non-traditional exports, almost 7% on average, when compared to the largest economies in Latin America," he affirmed.

The governor underlined that the lower price of exports and the higher price of imports, in addition to the fact that exports have gone down due to social conflicts, are resulting in a lower trade surplus estimate.

"In the past, we had estimated a surplus of US$17 billion; now our estimate is lower, although figures are still outstanding," he said.

On the other hand, the official remarked that one of the greatest risks for the Peruvian economy has to do with what may happen in the world's main markets.

"As is the case of the United States, Europe, and China, because growth forecasts for this year have been lowered everywhere," he added.
